German Heine Propeller
c1917 (Stock No: 0972)
Diameter: 2850mm
Pitch: 1800mm
Engine: 185hp NAG

One of the cache of
German props we recovered from an attic in Germany which is now
cleaned and conserved.
This
Heine propeller is constructed of two laminations of mahogany and
several of ash, which gives the well-known striped effect. The prop is in conserved
condition. The original varnish has been lightly cut back and a new layer of
French polish added.
The
prop is made for the NAG 185hp engine which was a licence built version
of the Conrad CIII, made by National Automobil-Gesellschaft AG of
Berlin. Sufficient engines were produced for two hundred of the DFW
CVc aircraft. Most DFW CV’s were fitted with 200 hp or 220 hp Benz
engines. It is unusual to be able to attribute a German prop to a
specific type of aircraft. The
excellent DFW CV (built by
the Deutsche Flugzeugwerke of Leipzig) first appeared in 1916 and was
used as a recce aircraft, although eventually it was used for every kind
of duty.
By 1917 over 1000
were in use on the Western front. DFW
was unable to produce them in sufficient numbers and the aircraft was
also built by Aviatik, Halberstadt and LVG. More were built than any other German design in
WW1.
